Lexicon: .docx and Word files
.docx is the file format Microsoft Word saves by default, part of the Office Open XML family that Ecma International publishes as ECMA-376. A .docx file is a packaged set of XML parts, not plain text, so a tool has to unpack it to read the words. From 4 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
Three tools on the register name it, two as .docx and one as Word. For a novelist it is the format the manuscript most likely already sits in.
A tool that takes .docx may still read only the text and drop comments, tracked changes or images.
