Lexicon: counting words
A word count measures text by the number of words, the unit novelists and publishers use. On the register it appears in two ceilings and one rough equivalent. From 3 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
Words are easier for a writer to check than characters, because every word processor shows them. They are harder to compare across languages that do not separate words with spaces.
Where a vendor gives both a character figure and a word figure, the character figure is recorded as the ceiling and the word figure as the vendor's own rough conversion.
