What novel and script to video tools accept as source text

Lexicon: the plain text file

A plain text file, usually ending in .txt, holds characters and line breaks and nothing else: no fonts, no bold, no page layout. It is the simplest file a tool can read, and five tools on the register name it. From 5 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.

Plain text keeps every word of a manuscript and loses all formatting. For a novel that is rarely a loss; for a screenplay it can be, if the tool relies on layout to tell a scene heading from an action line.

A text written as plain text can also be pasted, which is why a tool that takes .txt is rarely the only way to bring the same text in.
